Love Stories at Work - no I don’t work for match.com

As much as I hate my job sometimes, fascinating things happen on weekly basis. Today brought a love story in my email. Love story against all odds, where people are actually making an effort and making it work, regardless of distance. Gives me hope (and makes me feel like a failure for not making it work with a 10 or 50 mile distance, sigh…but I guess it takes two to make the effort in a relationship).

So to the story(he’s in Colombia, she is in Finland):

Hello Kate,

I’m Juan from Colombia and I’m contacting you on behalf of both of us. First of all we want to thank you for your answer.

Now I’ll answer your questions and provide you with some further information. Lotta is 20 right now but will turn 21 on May 4th and I just turned 22 on February.

We are both full-time university students: Lotta’s major is International Business and Juan’s major is Biology, expecting to graduate in about 2 or 3 years. We both have good English level (fluent) and have had some part-time and occasional jobs before.

We were actually thinking of finding a job by ourselves but it has been pretty hard to do find. Then I guess we’ll have to get enrolled with some “Placement” option. So we would need you to organize our jobs, please. Uh by the way, we would also want to work for the same employer but if it isn’t possible then at least we’d need to work in the same town.

I already have a US tourist visa, and Lotta due to her citizenship doesn’t need a visa for tourist and business travel of 90 days or less. This is just to make clear that our plans aren’t neither to stay in the US to live nor to work illegally.

We met back in 2005 in Louisville, KY. By the time we were exchange students. Then when we had to come back home we decided not to break up, so we have been together since then. We have seen each other during our holidays, which means twice a year. First I got to meet her parents, they invited me to Isla Margarita in Venezuela and we spent together the Christmas break of 2006. Then after that she has been 3 times in Colombia and I went to Finland last year and stayed there for over 2 months. But of course we can’t afford it all by ourselves, our parents have paid for all those things, of course we have helped with some money too, but it’s like nothing compared to what they have had to pay.

From all this dramatic story, you might guess what the reason for being interested in working abroad is: We just want to see each other again, being able to pay for it by ourselves and if possible make some profit out of it so we can save for our next holidays, or perhaps for a bigger plan: We are also thinking that at some point we could spend a longer time abroad under some exchange program, but we still need to do a lot of research about it.

Once again thank you and we’ll be looking forward to your answer.em>
